Earlier this year in the spring, a member of the committee and long-standing supporter of Emley AFC asked if I could make some branded tankards for the club, after seeing some pieces I had made for Shepley Cricket Club.
I have never been the biggest football fan but have watched Emley a couple of times in the last 20 odd years since moving back to the area and I do know that Emley AFC have supporters all over the UK and abroad, so it is with a great sense of care and pride that has gone into these hand-thrown Mugs and Tankards. It is a big financial commitment to commission a run of hand-made pieces, so these were pre-sold after a sample was photographed and advertised on the club website.
I lived in Emley for 3 years in the early 90s and have great memories of Emley Amateur Dramatics at the church hall with my brilliant friend, Hywel Roberts, the Green Dragon pub and the chippy van. Needless to say, all of these activities seemed to follow on from each other with alarming regularity. Hywel and I worked with Pauline behind the bar at the Dragon and I was shouting at the telly when I saw her and her husband (who’s name evades me now) on Football Focus in the build up to the biggest game in the club’s history. They only went and gave West Ham a big scare in that game too! I listened to the game in the car in a retail car park in Southport while my wife was choosing a bit of furniture for our first house in Formby where we had moved for my first teaching job. I never did make it into the shop that January Saturday in 1998.
A second run of these will be available soon, watch this space!
