Lockdown was a difficult time for everybody. To be able to exit the back door and escape to my studio was a positive. It was an opportunity to build up some stock of best sellers online but I also had time to work on new ideas and experiment on one off pieces to my heart’s content. I actually miss that time now.
Other people were seizing the opportunity to follow new adventures, start businesses and hobbies, and remember, everything is connected. And, so began a really nice collaboration following an exchange of Instagram messages.
O’Briens Bottle Shop had sprung up online and they wanted to work with a local potter to make some branded tankards. Luke sent me their logo and I had the stamp made.
The shop was not yet open in Holmfirth but once I had a couple complete, they put them out for pre-sale on their page and sold a first run of 20 within a couple of days. That was last summer.
Since then O’Briens have successfully opened their fantastic Beer Cafe and ordered 20 tankards for their Oktoberfest and then 20 beer beakers for Christmas. All sold out! And by the way, it’s a great place to go to relax and feel like you belong… I’ve really enjoyed working with O’Briens and loved the reaction we get from customers when we deliver (which is always conveniently during opening hours so it would be ridiculously rude not to try out at least a couple of their products), they were literally pulling them out of the box and getting their name on them. So nice to have such a strong reaction, long may it continue!

In October I was approached by Magic Rock Brewery and asked to do a run of Tankards with their branding but with a twist. Magic Rock have a sponsorship deal with Huddersfield Town and wanted to include the Town crest on the badge. This was a more challenging design to bring together but it had to work with the tagline “SUP THE TOWN”.
It was a bit of a privilege to make these as a lot of my friends in Shepley are Town fans. This Limited Edition was a run of 35 and made me realise that runs of over 20 are a real challenge in lots of ways. We live and we learn!
