Scipelei Pottery – So How Did It Get It’s Name Again?
I get that question a lot!
In 2016, I was setting up the studio and getting ready to invest in a new kiln. We were also buying furniture for the house that summer on our return from 5 years away in Qatar. As we were getting organised putting books on shelves and so on Susie came across our copy of “Shepley, Believe it or Not!”, written by local author David Billington.
Reading through some key dates in the village’s history, she found an entry that Shepley was entered as “Scipelei” in the Doomsday Book in 1086. “That would make a great name for your Pottery” she said.
It sounds a bit more intriguing than Shepley Pottery, that’s for sure. Which brings me to the pronunciation……

Most people Pronounce it “Ski-pa-ly”. However, we discussed it with a passing local languages expert who pronounced it “Shi-pa-lee”.
So there you have it, how we became to be Scipelei Pottery.
